The Friends of the Orchard Park Public Library is currently the largest and most active Friends group in Erie County, NY. Founded in 1982, Margaret Whitcher was the first President of the Friends and there were 28 members.
The Friends have purchased many books, shelves, display shelves, computers, furniture and other equipment that have enhanced the library’s service to the community. As the years go by, some of these same items have needed updating again. We funded most of the 2005 book budget for the Orchard Park Public Library when Erie County could not. The need to support our library increases as technology continues to change.
We have quarterly used book sales, a special book sale annually and the ongoing book sales on the Book Cart and in the Book Nook. We have also sponsored a “Bid on a Book” event annually. Online book sales are ongoing through Ebay.
Memberships are renewed annually and a Lifetime membership is offered as well. Members are welcome to attend our annual board meeting in July.
To learn more about how the Friends have supported our library over the years, refer to our Accomplishments and Future Plans page.
Our purpose is to maintain an association of persons interested in libraries; to focus public attention on the library; to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments, and bequests to the library; to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities for the community; and to support the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rites.
